This delightful retired couple, Ted and Anna Maria, from the Newlands Park area of Glasgow, had approached Earth Angels Landscapes to produce a garden design for their front and back garden.
We had just completed a garden for their friends, two doors up, and were keen to show me their semi detached home, and its beautiful mature garden, which for them was full of happy family memories. The old concrete pavers were 20 years old and although practical, were uninspiring.
My garden design showed curved lines and new beds of soft planting, just enough space to add some of Anna Maria’s favourite plants, like alstroemeria.
They were unsure of the type of paving they would like, so we visited my favourite stone suppliers to see their expansive range of materials, and see what they preferred. After looking at the possible of using a natural riven sandstone paving in warm hues, they did a complete turn around and decided on a silver grey granite, edged with black basalt setts. Although a similar colour to their old patio, they felt that the qualities of granite, being low maintenance, and un-like sandstone is, resistant to moss penetrating and is also non slip due to its bush hammered finish was the best option for them.
We turned our attention to the front garden and driveway. The front steps were replaced with new grey granite bullnose treads, we created a new granite path using the same pavers as the back garden, linking the front garden to the back with a long path. Next we turned our attention to the old gate which we removed and hand built a new hardwood gate and frames.
The old driveway was freshened up with new gravel, and we added a narrow driveway strip at the entrance using cropped stone setts, which retained the gravel in the driveway. Finally we commissioned a blacksmith to construct new metal driveway gates.
