Atif and his young family had recently returned to this charming detached villa in Bearsden after living in London.

They had approached Earth Angels landscapes to provide them garden design ideas for this large overgrown traditional herbaceous garden. I created a sleek and contemporary design, with the vision of open spaces and safe areas to allow their active children, freedom to play and run around.

The existing garden had no usable space, steep concrete steps to a small patio area and very slippery paths leading around the overgrown beds.

The old lawns were moss covered and wet, and a large pond was a danger to the young children. We filled in the pond and created a turning space for their cars, and before we did this, carefully removed all pond wildlife in large containers and transported newts and frogs to my pond at my own home.

We created a large patio area down one side of the original house to meet with the modern extension close to the kitchen. We built new L shaped steps, ensuring that the new treads were much wider and the riser height smaller, making them much safer for all of the family, young and old to use.

We built a wrap around the sandstone patio area, with new pressure treated sleepers. This formed a retaining wall and the new steps down to the new lawn area. We incorporated the sandstone into the sleeper treads. I advised my client to keep most of the existing shrubs and trees for the new garden design.

A mature acer crimson queen and magnolia soulangiana were placed together, for some spring colour, and we used large clumps of Astilbe and Hosta for the shady wet corners of the garden. Two mature espalier apple trees were planted to section off another area. Next we prepared a section of the garden, level with the patio.

A large sunken trampoline, was installed and surrounded by premium artificial grass. This project has transformed the garden into one with open spaces and plenty of room for entertaining.
